It was another huge step for DCU hurling as their Freshers side reversed the defeat their Fitzgibbon team suffered with a two point win over UL, with a scoreline of 1-20 to 2-15.
They retained the title they won last year, in a repeat fixture against the Limerick university.
DCU are adorned with a number of inter-county prodigies, including Wexford’s Damien Reck who has been playing at wing back for his county. The Oylegate Glenbrien man scored four points for his college, while his county teammate Rory O’Connor notched two more.
Reck assisted a Murtha Doyle goal mid-way through the second half which proved crucial, as Jake Morris notched a goal a few moments later to narrow the scores.
On the UL side, former Minor All-Ireland winning captain Brian McGrath – the younger brother of Noel and John – notched five points to keep UL within a hair’s breadth.
But a late point from Doyle sealed the two-point victory for DCU on a chilly night in Stradbally.
Elsewhere, in Portarlington, DCU won the All-Ireland Freshers football title for the third year in a row.
They met UL here too, and came away with a two point victory with a 0-10 to 0-08 scoreline, with seven of those points coming from the boot of David Garland of Monaghan.
